The 8-step journey
Positioning Canvas
One sentence that tells a buyer why you and not the alternative.
The problem this solves
Your homepage says you are a fast, simple, modern platform. So does every competitor. A visitor cannot tell what you do, who it is for, or why it beats the spreadsheet they are using now — so they leave, and you conclude the traffic was bad.
What it does
The canvas builds a positioning statement from four parts: the customer, the problem in their words, your approach, and the alternative you are displacing along with its limitation. It scores against your research and persona, so the statement is checked against what customers actually said rather than against taste.
What you end up with
The output, not the description. This is what exists in your account after you use it.
- A positioning statement in one sentence, with the four parts filled in.
- An elevator pitch and a short-form version for a bio or a cold email opener.
- A score against your recorded research, naming which part is weakest.
- The line that then feeds every generated draft, creative and campaign.
How to use it
- 1
Name the alternative honestly
Usually a spreadsheet, a manual process, or nothing. Naming a competitor when the real alternative is inaction produces a statement nobody recognises.
- 2
Use the customer’s words
The phrasing from your interviews beats the phrasing from your README, every time.
- 3
Check it scores
The score reads your research and persona. A statement that scores badly is usually one written before you talked to anyone.
